What is adhesive anchorage?

We see this phrase often in the masking world, but why? Adhesive anchorage is a tape’s ability to conform and hold to a coated surface. Think about the walls or surfaces you’re masking. They are never totally smooth. When you look closely, there are little dips and ridges that the tape must account for.

A masking tape’s adhesive anchorage performance comes down to what is known as wet-out. Once a masking tape is applied, its adhesive “wets out” or simply spreads across the entire surface area of the bond. This wet-out allows the tape to conform completely to the ever-so-slightly textured walls and surfaces that you’re masking.

If a tape doesn’t wet out and conform completely to a surface, then paint can find its way underneath the masking tape. This scenario compromises the straight edge that two-tone applications depend on.
